Historically the best game viewing is during the dry months when water becomes scarce resulting in game clustering around waterholes.  In the Timbavati this will generally be from May to September.  The rains normally start from around October which turns the bushveld into a green paradise.  This makes game viewing difficult but the abundance of bird life, baby animals and predators make up for this.

Avoca Private Bush Camp is a safari retreat for friends and family in the revered Timbavati Nature Reserve, which can be booked on a self-catering or fully catered basis. Open to the Kruger National Park, yet occupying private land, Avoca is wild and tranquil, offering an exclusive safari experience in simple, bush camp accommodation. The beauty of this private getaway spot is the lack of electricity, leaving all cooking and water heating up to gas and solar power. It is eco-friendly and idyllic, booked exclusively by one group (sleeps 8) and providing a peaceful spot to unwind and reconnect with the natural world. Avoca is now offering photographic safaris. The Timbavati Nature Reserve is known for superb game viewing, and is also the home of some of the only wild white lions on earth. The town of Hoedspruit is about an hour’s drive away, offering a close-by refuelling station with a wide variety of outdoor activities on offer.

There is one chalet with a double bed and en suite bathroom (shower and toilet). All rooms are equipped with bug screens, a wooden cupboard with shelving and hanging space, extra blankets, and bedside tables. The power in the rooms is solar charged, and not designed for charging batteries and cellphones. There are 3 twin rooms, two of which share an adjacent bathroom with separate toilet and shower; and one of which has its own bathroom containing a bath tub and toilet. All rooms are equipped with bug screens, a wooden cupboard with shelving and hanging space, extra blankets, and bedside tables.

Special occasions call for bush dinners, which can be arranged upon request. An open area on the Avoca land in the Timbavati is the perfect place to relax around a fire surrounded by the wilderness and enjoy a good meal and a couple of drinks with friends and family.

Morning and evening game drives offer the opportunity for fantastic game viewing, while other elements to the safari experience are bush dinners and sundowners. During afternoon game drive, guides will stop at sunset and set up some drinks and snacks for guests to enjoy while they stretch their legs before continuing with a night drive after dark. This is a traditional part of a safari experience!

What we think of it
