Located in the northern province of Nampula, on the shores of the aquamarine bay of Nanatha, lies Nuarro Lodge.  The eco rustic lodge is proud of its friendly staff, top class activities and hearty meals on offer in this remote and pristine environment.  The lodge was built with the help and close involvement of the local community.  To this day the lodge works together with the local village on issues involving conservation in the area and community projects.  Due to its close proximity to the continental shelf, divers can enjoy beach access diving.  Nuarro is one of only two lodges in Mozambique that offers this.  Memba Bay is also the perfect location to enjoy whale watching from the shore as mothers and calves are often seen in the secluded, protected waters of the bay during whale season.

Accommodation

Nuarro Lodge offers ten beach front chalets and two cottages, dotted along the extensive 2 km long beachfront.  The spacious chalets are all built from local, natural materials by the local community.  Tucked into the natural environment, all chalets have sea views with private paths leading down to the beach.  The slightly larger family chalets can accommodate up to two extra beds in the room.  An individual solar panel system connected to each chalet provides sufficient electricity to recharge cameras and heat the shower in the en suite bathroom.  Note that in line with the lodge’s eco status the bathrooms feature a composting toilet system.

Dining

The open restaurant and bar is situated in the western side of the beach.  It offers lovely views over the bay as well as Nuarro Rock from which the lodge derived its name.  The menus change regularly and guests can expect to enjoy the freshest seafood available complimented by locally grown herbs and vegetables from Nuarro’s gardens.  The restaurant is a popular place to hang out with relaxing sofas, oversized pillows and a sunken lounge.

Activities

The team and owners of Nuarro are very passionate about diving.  Their fully equipped PADI Dive Centre can cater for all levels of recreational divers.  Divers can choose from the easy shallow shore entry to deep vertical walls and wrecks.  One of their latest diving experiences is glow diving or fluorescent diving.  Be prepared for a brilliant new experience using blue lights and special filters to marine organisms glow in the dark – a real under water disco of colour. Aside form the watersport activities on offer, clients can also enjoy mountain biking, bird watching, massages and a visit to the local village.

What we think of it

Completely off the beaten track, a little paradise with friendly faces and great diving and snorkeling.  One of the best locations for whale watching in season!
